Summary of Book
Little Ana is thrilled when the travelling librarian returns to her village on his trusted mules, Alfa and Beto. Inspired by real-life librarian Luis Soriano, Waiting for the Biblioburro introduces children to the concept of mobile libraries that bring literacy to rural Colombia. The colourful folk-style illustrations perfectly match this beautiful celebration of books and reading.
Author Biography
Monica Brown, Ph.D. is the author of, most recently, Lola Levine is Not Mean!, the first in a chapter book series from Little Brown & Co; She is also the author of Maya's Blanket/la manta de Maya (Lee & Low), a picture book illustrated by Caldecott-winner David Diaz, recently reviewed in the New York Times. She has written many award-winning books for children, including Pablo Neruda: Poet of the People (Henry Holt), winner of the Américas Award for Children's Literature and an Orbis Pictus Honor for Outstanding Nonfiction, and Waiting for the Biblioburro (Random House), a Christopher Award winner. Her picture book Marisol McDonald Doesn't Match/Marisol McDonald (Lee & Low) is the winner of the Tejas Star Book Award, the International Latino Book Award, and a Pura Belpré Honor for Illustration. Marisol McDonald and the Clash Bash/Marisol McDonald y la fiesta sin igual, the second book in the Marisol series, was published in September 2013. Her books have received numerous starred reviews and accolades.
Illustrator Biography
John Parra is an award-winning illustrator, designer, teacher, and fine art painter. His children's books have earned numerous awards, including the SCBWI Golden Kite Award, ALA's Pura Belpré Honors, the Christopher Award, the International Latino Book Award, and many more. His illustration clients have included: United Airlines, The United States Postal Service, Hitachi Data Systems, Jeep/DaimlerChrysler, National Geographic, PBS, El Museo del Barrio, Boston Children's Hospital, Chronicle Books, Penguin Random House, SCBWI, Santa Clara Magazine, Virgin Records and more. Parra's original artwork has also been showcased and displayed in numerous gallery shows and museum exhibitions in New York, California, and throughout the United States and abroad. Many of his fine art paintings now reside with private collectors. In 2015 John was invited by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to present a special event about his work and career in art and illustration; and in 2017 John's art will appear on six Forever postal stamps from the USPS titled "Delicioso." He currently lives with his wife, Maria, in Queens, New York.After her years of study, she worked for a few months at Christian Lacroix and started freelance as a textile designer and illustrator. After a few trips to Asia and Africa, she took out portraits and drawings from her notebooks, some of which will be exhibited at Bon Marché in Paris, at Ventilo and at L'île de la tortue in Paris, at Studio Peret in Barcelona, at Loved in London. She also paints decorations for the windows of La bonne rename, the gallery L'île de la Tortue , and Bon Marché , in Paris, for Tomorrowland.in Japan, designs a collection of ephemeral salt dough tableware, widely acclaimed by the decoration press. Today, she continues her path and illustrates works for a large number of French and foreign publishers: Gautier-Languereau , Didier Jeunesse , Gallimard Jeunesse , le Rouergue , etc. She also creates drawings and declines her work as an illustrator and textile designer for Fragonard France and Djeco . She occasionally collaborates for the press and for events: Atmosphères , Maison française , Air France Magazine , Marie-Claire ,Maison Madame Figaro , Travel Curtain Rising , Literary Figaro , Filotéo , Astrapi , etc.
