Author / Illustrator Biography
Tony Bradman: I was born and brought up in London and still live there. I've written poetry and picture books, short and long fiction and educational books and plays. VIKING BOY (Walker Books) has been very successful, and ANGLO-SAXON BOY (Walker Books) - the story of one boy's involvement in the Battle of Hastings - won the Historical Association's Young Quills Award in 2018. Other recent highlights include ATTACK OF THE VIKINGS (Bloomsbury Educational), WINTER OF THE WOLVES (Bloomsbury Educational), the story of how the tale of Beowulf came to Britain, and THE BOY AND THE GLOBE (Barrington Stoke), in which a young boy meets Shakespeare and helps him at a difficult time in his life. QUEEN OF DARKNESS (Bloomsbury Educational) is my take on the Boudica story, BLACKOUT (Scholastic) is a WW2 story, and A BAD DAY FOR JAYDEN (Barrington Stoke) is a contemporary story about a boy who is helped through a bad time by his teacher. I also write articles about children's books (for Books for Keeps) and occasional reviews (for The Guardian), and do school visits and Skype sessions with classes.
Eileen Browne: Eileen was born and brought up in Birmingham. Eileen lived in London for over twenty years before moving to Wiltshire where she now lives. She worked as a school teacher and a youth worker before becoming an author and illustrator. Her first book was published in 1977. Eileen believes “Certain groups of people are not well represented in books. For example, females only feature as main characters in around 30% of children’s books. Because of this, I give them priority. Where’s That Bus? was one of the first animal picture books with all female characters.” Eileen has written books with Kit Wright and Floella Benjamin. In 2004, Handaís Surprise was made into a theatre production by the Little Angel Theatre, London. Since then it has played in many London theatres, schools, Holloway Prison and at the Guardian Hay Festival.
